The Chance For A Fresh Start

new moon in Aries

The moon is dark tonight, a new
moon for a new year. It is
hollow and hungers to be full.
It is the black zero of beginning…

Forgive the dead year. Forgive
yourself. What will be wants
to push through your fingers.

The light you seek hides
in your belly. The light you
crave longs to stream from
your eyes. You are the moon
that will wax in new goodness

                                -- Marge Piercy

The new moon is tonight. And whether you’re obsessed with biodynamic farming or you couldn't care less about lunar cycles, the moon and it’s phases can be a very powerful metaphorical and literal symbol in our lives.

The moon imparts a gravitational pull on bodies of water; It controls the tides, the oceans. We as humans are made of mostly water, thus we too can be powerfully affected by the lunar phases. It's science, people!

The new moon tonight is doubly important as it is not only the time of renewal and rest, but this new moon also represents the astrological new year.  A resetting of the wheel as the new moon begins the cycle again in Aries.  You may be feeling that fiery energy of transformation. You may be feeling a little hot-tempered or hot-headed. Aries is the constellation of the ram after all –  and this energy is all about breaking down doors, pushing, and even, when necessary, fighting for something of noble and great.

What’s exciting about this time is that it offers us new opportunity. A fresh start. If your intentions in January have withered and died like my new little tulips did in last week’s frost, it’s OK. Here is your second chance. Perhaps is an even better time to plant seeds and desires for the year.  As the moon grows, so will the energy of your intention. You have that power and force behind you.

With the mix of new moon and Aries – the first of the fire signs, we can find the power to really ignite our spark, ignite a fresh intention and perhaps even a new direction for this year.

To best tune into this energy today and in the coming days, find some time to journal and reflect.  Here are some prompts to get the creative juices flowing:

  1. What do I want to manifest in this new season? In this new year of celebrating spring and life?
  2. What am I fighting for? What am I pushing up against? What door am I trying to break down? Do I want it bad enough? Are my intentions pure?
  3. What do I want to release from last year? What do I want to burn away? What do I want to stay with me?

Pay attention to how you feel. Pay attention and honor the cycles and seasons of the year but also of your own body. In awareness and attention we can find great healing and alignment. It is not too late – it’s never too late to tune in.

Enjoy this new moon!

Warmly,
Joanna
